Training GPs

Colinton Surgery undertakes the final training of GPs and usually has at least one (sometimes two) Specialist Training GPs. A Specialist Training GP (formerly known as a Registrar) is a fully qualified doctor who is completing their General Practice training.

Nicole has worked with the practice for 5 years & has taken over as Office Manager in March 2024. She previously has covered reception roles, as well as phlebotomy

Nurses

All nurses can help you with minor injuries, dressings, injections, removal of stitches, blood pressure, blood tests, cervical smears, breast self-examination and family planning advice. They can also advise on travel immunisations, diet, alcohol control, stress management and carry out routine health checks. Nurses also conduct clinics for Asthma, COPD, Heart Disease & Diabetes.

Reception

Receptionists provide an important link for patients with the practice and are your initial contact point for general enquiries. They can provide basic information on services and results and direct you to the right person depending on your health issue or query. Receptionists make most of the patient appointments with the GPs and nurses. They also perform other important tasks such as issuing repeat prescriptions and dealing with prescription enquiries, dealing with financial claims, dealing with patient records and carrying out searches and practice audits.

Community Nurses

Telephone 0131 441 9128 The district nurses provide nursing treatments and advice to the housebound and patients recently discharged from hospital (over 16). Their working hours are 08.00 - 16.30 but the best time to contact them in the surgery is Monday to Friday 14.00 - 14.30. If they are out of the office a message can be left on their answering machine.

Health Visitors

Telephone 0131 312 2164 The Health Visitors visit all families with children under 5 years old. They provide information, advice and support to parents of pre-school children, particularly at times of physical or emotional stress. The Health Visiting team are available Monday to Friday 9 til 5. However, if they are out of the office a message can be left on their answering machine. The Health Visiting team are based at Allermuir Medical Centre (opposite Tesco at Colinton Mains).
